What is ICT?
Information and Communication Technology
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to the wide range of technologies used to handle communications and digital information. It covers everything from computers, smartphones, software, the internet, and networks, to emerging tools like cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
According to Heemskerk et al. (2005), ICT is not just about learning how to use a computer—it also involves understanding how technology transforms communication, work, and education. UNESCO (2007) also emphasizes that ICT can increase access to information, improve learning outcomes, and promote global digital inclusion.
In the modern world, ICT plays a vital role in almost every aspect of life. It empowers individuals to connect, share knowledge, solve problems, and create solutions. In education, for example, ICT enables online classes, e-learning platforms, and interactive media. In business, it helps streamline operations and expand global reach.
As we continue living in the IT era, understanding ICT means preparing ourselves for a future where technology will shape the way we live, work, and communicate.
